Reproductive Sytem
Male Accessory Organs
- Produces & secretes seminal fluids
- Various ducts & tubes which act as delivery for male gametes
- External genitalia made up of penis & scrotum
Epididymis
- Comma-shaped, tightly coiled tube
- Function: to mature & store sperm cells( for @ least 20 days)
- Expels sperm w/ contraction of muscles of epididymis to vas deferens
Vas Deferens (Ductus Deferens)
- Carries sperm from epididymis to the ejaculatory duct
- Passes through the inguinal canal & over bladder
- Moves sperm by peristalsis(forward movement)
- Spermatic Cord: made up ductus deferens, blood vessels & nerves surrounded by connective tissue shealth
Urethra
- Extends from base of bladder to tip of penis(7-8 inches long)
- Carries both sperm and urine
- Sperm into from ejaculatory duct
Semen
- Milky white, sticky mix or secretions from many glands
- Typical ejaculation releases 2-5mL
- 20-100 million spermatozoa
- Alkalinity (pH 7.2-7.6)
- Provide transport medium for sperm
- Inhibits bacterial multiplication
Seminal Vesicle
- Produces a THICK, akaline, yellowish secretion(60% of semen)
- Location: base of bladder
- Contains: Fructose, Vitamin C, etc.
Prostate Gland
- Secretes a milky fluid that helps activate sperm(allows for locomotion)
- Circles upper part of urethra
- Chestnut shape & makes up 20% of semen
Bulbourethra Gland(Cowper's Gland)
- Location: base of penis under prostate
- Secrete alkaline mucus in response to sexual stimulation, & lubricates penis for penetration just before ejaculation
-Pre-ejaculate cleanes neutralizes traces of urine.
- Makes up 5% of semen
Scrotum
- Holds testes
- Maintains testes at 3 degrees C lower than normal body temp. to protect sperm viability
Penis
- Tubular organ through which distal portion of urethra passes
- Conducts urine out
- Delivers semen to female
Male Reproductive system
-
Ductus system: Delivery of male sperm
- Includes:
Epididymis
Ductus Deferens(Vas deferens)
Urethra
- Accessory Organs:
Seminal Vesicle
Prostate gland
Bulbourethral gland
Spermatogenesis
- Production of sperm cells
- Begins at puberty & continues throughout life
- Takes about 64-72 days
- Produces several 100 million sperm each day
Male Sex Hormones
-
Follicle Stimulating Hormone(FSH) - At puberty stimulates sertoli cells for sperm production & maturation
-
Gonadotropin releasing hormone(GnRH) - Released by hypothalamus in brain to stimulate anterior pituitary gland to release LH & FSH
-
STDs
- Most people with an STD experience little to no symtoms
- Birth Control pills do not prevent STDs
- Only latex condoms prevent spread of STDs
- Infections which are capable of being spread from person to person through:
Sexual intercourse
Oral-genital contact in non-sexual ways
Symptoms:
- No symptoms
- Sores(eitherpainful or painless)
- Blood in urine
- Burning sensation during urination
- Rashes & itching
- Bumps
- Warts
- Unusual discharge
Gonads
Testes: Males primary sex organ
- Produces sperm
Ovaries: Females primary sex organ
- Produces ova or eggs
Reproduction- Process by which new individuals(offspring) of a species are produced
Sexual Reproduction- reproduction involving 2 parents
Fertilization- fusion of egg & zygote
