World War I
Causes of War(other then the assassination)
Militarism: Building up an army out of fear
Alliances: Created to check the power in other countries
Imperialism: The British and French made Germany jealous so they could colonize parts if Africa.
Nationalism: Countries thought they were better than one another.
Mobilization: preparing the armed forces for war
Franz Ferdinands Assassination:
Born in 1863, he became very rich after his cousin died because he inherited his estate, and became even more rich when Crown Prince Rudolf committed suicide in 1889.
Not a whole lot of people liked him, only his wife. However because she was not royal blood the people made sure that if they had children that they could never inherit the throne.
He was very conservative, he hated the Hungarians and he thought the Slavs were less humans.
Garvilo Princip(Ferdinands Assassin): His first attempt failed when he tried to kill them with a bomb. But he succeeded with his second attempt. He killed him because he wanted to unite the Slav people and he could not do that with the power that Ferdinand had.
When Princip killed Ferdinand little did he know this was a bad choice. One being Franz was against any wars with Russia so he could try anything to stop them. Also he put the empire above his personal beliefs so he was sympathetic to making the bi-partite state into the tri-partite that would include the Slavs
Important Context:
They were composed of two allies. The Triple Alliance(Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary) and The Triple Entente(Britain, France, and Russia)
Majority of the fighting took place along the Western fronts and the Eastern fronts. They used trenches along these fronts and then main one that they used ran from Switzerland to Belgium.
WWI was also known as the "Great War" and took place on June 28th, 1914 and ended on 1918.
Trenches: long deep ditches dug into the ground and they were where the soldiers lived and did the majority of their fighting from because they could be covered from plain sight.
Many aspects of WWI changed how we view certain things. (Espionage, Propaganda, Anti-War protests, Role of Women, Animals, PTSD, WWI in Middle East and Asia, Trenches, Technological advances).
Aspects of WWI that changed the world:
Many of the problems that arose in WWI was that people started seeing people from different countries as different. An example of this is when the people figured out that the Germans were spying from then on Germans were always looked at differently.
Also two things that really changed were women's roles and Anti-War protests. Women then we're not seen as equal to me but because the war happened they needed to step into factories and work "men" jobs which ended up showing the people that women can do just the same as men. As well even through we are not fighting for anti-war this still showed people that they have a voice and if people have a voice they are going to use it because they are not going to stay in the shadows.
WWI in other countries, this was important because it was able to show that even if the war did not directly affect them they were still involved and it ended up affecting them just as much it also gave a new perspective on many of the countries and their side even today.
Finally there are ones that we use today and are very important in the world now. Such as animals in the war because now we don't use animals for war but we have them as are pets and there are even animals that do have a carer in helping people like they did in the war (service animals). As well PTSD is an important thing because we can see now how PTSD can affect your life forever and how you can get if from many different scenarios.
One other thing was technological advances, during the war we could see how the tech was progressing and how it better tech helped the soldiers and this is important because it can show how advanced a country can get in just a matter of a few years.
Schlieffen Plan:
This plan was made by a German general (General Alfred von Schlieffen) and was a surprise attack on France
This plan was made to ensure that Russia had a victory over the France-Russian alliance by making Russia have no strength and by slowly fighting off France.
However this ultimately failed because there was too much planing and it was not realistic. So they decided to declare WWI on August 3rd.
It was ultimately supposed to avoid having a war on the two fronts(one against Russian and the other against France).
The Treaty of Versailles:
General Information - It was signed on June 28th 1919 (5 years after the assassination), This treaty ended the state war of Germany and Allied Powers, Many Countries did not want to sign it, Finally they hoped that signing this would stop the wars in the future (which now we know did not happen).
Terms: It blamed Germany for starting the war, all German colonies were given to the League of Nations, Germany's military was reduced to 100,000 soldiers, no tanks and no air force, Germany paid 33 billion dollars for damage from war,
Analysis of the terms: All the countries believed that Germany should be responsible for starting the war. Many countries thought that it was a good idea for Germany to give up its colonies so it would reduce the power they had. I believe it was a good idea to reduce their military because it stopped them from having so much power over other countries. Finally, it was a good idea for them to pay 33 billion because it gives them a chance to pay for what was their fault but also it does not make them go bankrupt because if they do they would need to rely on other countries.
Long term affect of the Treaty: Overall the Treaty was made to help prevent any other wars like WWI. I think this treaty being very unfair to Germany got Germany mad and I think that is also one main cause of why WWII broke out, because Germany had to accept all the blame which they didn't want to do also they got a lot of land and military taken away so they wanted their power back and decided to do this in WWII.
Sum up facts of WWI:
Before WWI war was perceived to be necessary and sometimes even glorious.
WWI had soldiers from all over the world, Britain's army had soldiers from all over including Australia, India, Africa, New Zealand, and even Canada.
We know a lot about the soldiers who fought in WWI because of journals and other things and how they wrote about the war changed our relationship with systemic violence.
Many new weapons became built and women started to get more reconized for being more than just a house wife.
Conditions:
They also fought in trenches which were very unhygienic conditions so many of the soldiers developed medical problems.
Used Bombs which took out many people all at once.
Looked difficult, cold, and dirty. They fought very close to each other.
