Mechanism of action
It increases the resorption of water at the Renal collecting duct
Urinary flow reduced, urine osmolality increased
This increases levels of cyclic AMP and collecting duct
Serum osmolality within acceptable physiological range mantained
Enhance permeability of the membrane to free water
Vasopressin stimulates adenylate cyclase activity
Vasopressin reduces the release of adrenocorticortrophic hormone
Increase plasma cortisol concentration
Contraindication
Renal disease
Migraine and seizure disorder
Pregnancy
Asthma
Water intoxication
Uremia
Allergies to vasopressin analogues
Seizures
Indications
Diabetes insipidus
To aid treat abdominal distentiom
Mantain volume of water in extracellular fluid
Mantain osmolality
In treatment of gastrointestinal hemorrhage
In treatment of vasodilatory shock
Storage
Stored at room temperature between 59 to 86 degrees F
Do not freeze
Discard if it contain particulate matter
Discard if its cloudy or discolored
Discard penetrated multi dose vial 30 days
Route
Intravenous administration
Dilute to a concentration of 1unit/ml or 5%dextrose
Discard when used solution after 8hours at room temperature
Intramuscular
Inject vasopressin into a large muscle
Aspirated prior to injection to avoid injection into blood vessel
