DT Product Materials Analysis
Cedar
Cedar is good for outside use because it contains natural oils that have benefits to protecting and leaving the product outdoors.
The natural oils in cedar which are especially resistant to damage caused by bugs, decay or water. This is specifically good for my product as it will be situated outside and may face the different elements.
Cedar has the ability to be protected by other products such as paint or other oils and waxes. This means that this can protect the wood even better than it protects itself.
One of the major benefits of using Cedar is that it is especially strong against warping and sagging that other woods are prone to doing outside. This prolongs the products life.
Cedar has other benefits such as it is less expensive than Teak and it is lighter than oak, which means that it can be transported more easily being made out of cedar.
Cedar is regarded to be heavy duty so can withstand high winds and other elements that may damage the product, therefore prolonging its life cycle.
One of the disadvantages of using Cedar however, is that it will require protection from other varnishes or waxes to be able to sit outside all year round.
Another disadvantage is that because it is a soft wood it may be prone to scratching or dented by external objects.
Teak
Teak is another good wood for using outdoors as it contains oils that repel water which protects it from warping, cracking or becoming brittle. It can withstand heavy amounts of rainfall, which is useful in England.
The oils that protect it from weathering also protect it from pests like termites.
Teak is low maintenance which means that it doesn't necessarily need a protective finish or varnish. Also, this wood will age and fade well.
The wood will last a lifetime which means that this product will have a very long life if this wood is choosen.
The main disadvantage of using teak as outdoor furniture is the exspesnive price that comes with the wood.
Oak
One of the main advantages of oak would be because of it's strength and close grain which makes it stable and hard wearing.
This is the most attractive wood with the grain style that oak has.
The wood has good water repellent that allows it to be placed outside for long period of times iwthout rotting and needing protecting.
This wood also polishes and reacts to finishes and protecting products meaning that this product can be enhanced by using these products.
This product is also likely to warp in the sunlight and rain than other woods.
One disadvantage of using oak is that it is a very heavy wood that will be difficult for my clinet to move and transport.
Another disadvantage is that if there is a high tannin content and exposure with wet weather this can react with oil finishes.
Redwood
Redwood is one of the most resistant softwoods to both insect and rot.
The wood is less prone to cracking and warping due to moisture than most other softwoods. This makes it not only more stable in outdoor use but also adds to its resistance to other types of damage.
The Woods natural colour and gran are aesthetically pleasing.
Being a softwood, it is more sustainable than hardwoods.
Its a popular choice for a various outdoor applications, because of its resistance to rot and insects. It is commonly used to construction material for outdoor material, which would suit my product.
It can also be finished for further protection to increase the lifespan, of the wood, and my product.
Is sold in strips and so can allow for the material to warp, and less waste to be created.
