Non-Traumatic
Swelling, pain, stiffness
Can be due to: infection, injury, or arthritis
Special test: Patellar tap test, Peripatellar swelling test
Positive? Severe joint effusion
Pain
Can be due to: overuse, overtraining, and faulty mechanics
Patellar tendinitis (Jumpers knee)
Dull aching pain in anterior knee
Can be due to: degeneration, overuse, muscle imbalance/weakness, injury or surgery
Special test: Grind test
Postive? Patellofemoral pain syndrome
Inflammation, burning, aching, pain, clicking, popping, snap on lateral knee, redness, warmth
Can be due to: overuse, friction, poor flexility and muscle imbalance
Special test: Noble Compression Test
Postive? Iliotibal band friction syndrome
Traumatic
Heard a "pop", severe pain, loss of ROM, and instability
Your injury is potentially ligamentous in nature
Medial/Lateral Knee pain, contact injury, excessive rotation
Special Test: Valgus Stress Test
Positive? Continue with Apley's Distraction Test
MCL Tear
Special Test: Varus Stress Test
Positive? Continue with Apley's Distraction Test
LCL Tear
Pain "within" knee, excessive knee extension, deceleration, excessive medial rotation
Special Tests: Anterior Drawer Test
Positive? Continue with Lachman's Test and Slocum Test
ACL Tear
Special Test: Posterior Drawer Test
Positive? Continue with Posterior Sag Sign and Hughston's Posteromedial Sign
PCL Tear
Knee gives way or locks, delayed swelling, tenderness
Varus/valgus force, excessive twisting/acceleration
Special Test: McMurray's Test (ER)
Positive? Continue with Apley's Compression test and Bounce Home Test
Medial Meniscal Tear
Special Test: McMurray's Test (IR)
Positive? Continue with Apley's Compression test and Bounce Home Test
Lateral Meniscal Tear
Your injury is potentially meniscal in nature
