pathophysiology
Septic shock occurs when a pathogen enters the bloodstream and secretes toxic wastes. These toxic wastes, cause an inflammatory reaction cascade, which cause blood vessels to dilate and vascular resistance to decrease. This effect causes an extremely low blood pressure. Increased vascular permeability causes fluid to move out of the vascular department and into the tissues. This causes edema, fluid in the lungs and a lack of fluid in the vascular compartment to reach tissues. Without properly perfusion to the organs, they cannot function properly, and one by one they will begin to malfunction.
