Woman presents drastic changes to appearance, no regular menses, "healthy and raw" vegan diet; no GMOs, gluten, cooked or processed foods. Advice?
Nutrients: Types and Uses in the body
Macromolecules
Provide fuel for the processes of cellular respiration to form ATP
Lipids
Trigylcerides, phospholipids, steroids (including cholesterol), and eicosanoids. Provides 9 kcal per gram. Cholesterol required as a component of the plasma membrane, and is a precursor molecule for other steroid hormones, bile salts, and vitamin D.
Proteins
Provide 4 kcal per gram. Source of nitrogen in that proteins contain the amine group, the chemical element needed for synthesizing other nitrogen-containing molecules, such as the nitrogenous base in RNA and DNA
Carbohydrates
Composed of monosaccharides, disaccharides & polysaccharides. Includes sugars, starches, and fibers. Glucose is the primary energy source for the human body. Provide 4 kcal per gram
Water
Considered a nutrient because the body requires 2-3 liters of water daily to maintain fluid balance and processes of the urinary system
Vitamins
Organic molecules required for normal metabolism, only present in small quantities in food. Water or fat-soluble, essential or nonessential.
Minerals
Inorganic ions, like iron, calcium, sodium, and iodine, that have various functions in the body. All obtained from the diet. Deficiency of minerals leads to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, pale skin, and headaches.
Calcium is required for the formation and maintenance of the skeleton; sodium and potassium function to maintain a resting membrane potential; iodine is needed to produce thyroid hormone
RDA
The Recommended Daily Allowance is the average daily level of intake sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of most healthy individuals. MyPlate is a visual representation of the proportions of each food group we should consume with each meal
Body Systems
Endocrine
Key endocrine glands rely on absorbed nutrients to properly function and secrete hormones necessary for development
Nervous
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids contribute to the maintenance and repair of neural circuits vital to brain functioning
Cardiac
Amino acids from proteins are required to build the large amounts of hemoglobin found within every RBC, maintaining healthy blood is vital for circulation of blood throughout the body
Urinary
Kidneys require energy from absorbed nutrients to filter blood and undergo its normal functioning; urea is produced when protein consumed from the diet are broken down
Muscular
Proteins contain necessary amino acids essential for strengthening bones and muscles, carbohydrates and lipids provide energy necessary for bodily and cellular functioning
"Healthy Lifestyle"
She is not consuming any of the vital nutrients her body needs to support any of her body systems. She isn't eating any proteins to build and strengthen her bones, there are no carbohydrates or fats in her diet to provide her with energy so she is lethargic, weak and looks sickly.
Effects on the body
Her hair will continue to fall out and she will continue to lose body mass, motor, and neural functioning, she will basically die from the inside out. She will most likely become infertile as well since she isn't supplying her body with nutrients for her blood and endocrine system.
Positive feedback
The cardiac and muscular systems are continually being denied of nutrients it needs, if the cardiac system is not functioning properly, blood will not circulate throughout the body which will in turn harm her urinary system among her other body systems.
Reestablishing homeostasis
To reestablish homeostasis, she must reintroduce vital nutrients into her diet, especially proteins, carbohydrates and fatty acids. There are many vegan protein alternatives that she may consume until she works her way back up to eating regular proteins. Her appearance will improve as well as her body systems that have been denied of what they need to function
