Homemade Face Mask for Coronavirus
Why?
Surgical face masks are in shortage nationwide
Reducing the spread of corona virus while not hoarding vital supplies is important as health care workers need them the most
It is relatively cheap to DIY a face mask
You can make one for friends, family, yourself, or donate some
If you must go outside during the shelter-in-place (work, groceries), some protection is better than nothing
How to make a face mask?
Materials
cotton fabric, tightly woven
elastic, or fabric ties
sewing machine or thread
scissors
ruler
sewing pins or clips
Using it
Avoid touching the front mask to adjust or remove it
Discard or wash it with soap/laundry

Some sewing skill is recommended, but not necessary
Could also ask a quilter or someone experience to make one for you
How effective is it?
Coronavirus is 0.1 microns, but floats in droplets of larger sizes
Well-made DIY facemask won't protect as well as professional respirators or surgical masks
Still better than nothing
The best DIY facemasks perform better than surgical masks (70-79% filtration of 0.3 micron particles) but have complex materials

"The best medical mask — called the N95 respirator — filters out at least 95 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns. By comparison, a typical surgical mask — made using a rectangular piece of pleated fabric with elastic ear loops — has a filtration efficiency ranging from 60 to 80 percent."
