: WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW
Definition:
bullying that takes place using electronic technology
cell phones, tablets, and computers
social media sites, text messages, chats, and websites
mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles
Prevention of Cyberbullying
Be aware of what your kids are doing online
Talk with your kids about cyberbullying and other online issues
know the sites your kids visit
tell your kids that you will be review their online communication
learn about the sites they like to use
try-out the devices they use
install parental controls on computers, tablets, and cell phones
ask for their passwords and promise to only use them in emergency
ask to "friend" or "follow" your kids on social media

Why cyberbullying is different
cyberbullying can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
cyberbullying can reach children even when they are alone
messages and images can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to a very wide audience
deleting inappropriate, or harassing messages, texts, and pictures is extremely difficult once they have been posted
Frequency of cyberbullying
NCES indicates that 9% of students in grades 6-12 experienced cyberbullying in 2010-2011
YRBSS finds that 15% of high school students were electronically bullied in the year 2013
