THE ROLLS CHILDREN PLAY IN BULLYING
Kids involved in Bullying
Kids who bully
Kids who are bullied
Kids who assist
: encourage the bullying behavior and occasionally join in
Kids who reinforce
: give the bully an audience, but not directly involved
Outsiders
: neither reinforce the bullying nor defend the child being bullied
Kids who defend
: actively comforts the child that is being bullied
Children play 3 different roles
"Bullies"
"Victims"
"The Witness"
Importance of not labeling
labeling sends the message that behaviors cannot change
"bully" or "victim" labels fails to recognize the many roles children might play in different bullying situations
labels disregard factors contributing to the behavior such as peer influence or school climate
Alternatives to labeling
Instead of using the label "bully" refer to them as a child "who has bullied"
Instead of using the label "victim" refer to them as a child "who was bullied"
focus on the behavior of the children involved
