Chemistry
Redox Reaction
Oxidation and reduction happening in the reaction at the same time
Oxidation
gain of oxggen
The loss of hydrogen
Lose of electron
which means the reactant has been oxidised by the other reactant which is known as an oxidising agent
Reduction
the loss of oxygen
Gain of hydrogen
Gain of electron
Which means that the reactant has been reduced by the other reactant which is known as an oxidising agent §
Oxidation state/ Number
a number given to the element is which starts with the '+' or a '-' sign
Rules of assigning oxidation states
Rule 1: a pure element uncombined with other elements is assigned an oxidation state of 0
Rule 2: For Simple ions, the magnitude of the oxidation state of the element is equivalent to the charge of the ion
Rule 3: The sum of the oxidation sates of elements forming a compound is the oxidation state of the compound
Oxidation states of some elements in their compounds is fixed
it is the charge of the atom of the element
