Solid State of Matter
-
CRYSTALLİNE SOLİDS
DEFINITION
A solid in which atoms, ions or molecules have an ordered arrangementin three dimensions
PROPERTIES
-
They have a regular arrangement in their atoms, ions and molecules.
-
-
-
-
DIAMOND
It is a special type of solid which has covalent bonds between large number of carbon atoms. It is called 'network solid'. Diamon is very hard and has very high melting point.
-
IONIC SOLIDS
-
PROPERTIES
-
-
-
-
A positive ion is surrounded by as many negative ions as possible and a negative ion is surrounded by as many negative ions as possible
MOLECULAR SOLIDS
DEFINITION
A solid that consists of neutural atoms or moleules held together by Van der Waals forces or hydrogen bond
-
METALIC SOLIDS
DEFINITION
Metallic ions consists of a three dimensional arrangment of positively charged metal ions surrounded by delocalized, monile valence electrons. The attraction between the electron cloud and and positively charged metallic ions is called metallic bond.
PROPERTIES
-
-
-
-
They have luster, namely they are shiny
COVALENT NETWORK SOLIDS
DEFINITION
Solids in which atoms are bounded strongly by covalent bonds to form a giant molecule called network solids such as diamond and graphite
-
AMORPHOUS SOLIDS
DEFINITION
They are non-crystalline solids in which the atoms and molecules are not organized in a definite lattice pattern. Such solids include galss, plastic and gel.
