First nations- the umbrella name for the diverse aboriginal peoples who have collective rights that are recognized and protected in Canadas constitution

Indian Act- federal legislation related to rights and status of first nations peoples, first passed in 1876 and amended several times
Collective rights- rights guaranteed to specific groups in Canadian society for historical and constitutional reasons
Collective identity- the shared identity of a group of people especially because of a common language or culture
Legislation
Numbered treaties- the numbered treaties are historic agreements that affect the rights and identity of some first nations in Canada, the numbered treaties have roots in the royal proclamation of 1763. The proclamation recognized first nations right to land, and it also established making treaties with first nations peacefully.
Modern Treaties- nation to nation relationships between indigenous people, these treaties allow indigenous to rebuild their communities and nations on their own terms.
Indian Act- federal legislation related to rights and status of first nation peoples. This act defined how they had to conduct affairs ex. they had to band elections. The act also restricted the right of first nations travelling freely, to take political action, and circumstances regarding cultual action.
Official language minorities- Everyone in Canada has the right to publicly funded schools that provide either English or French, allowing anglophones and francophones to continue with their culture. This is present in section 23 of the Canadian Charter.
Canadian constitution- a special set of laws that establish a framework of governance. Collective rights are apart of what makes up Canadas Constitution. These rights belong to groups of people, the main purpose of these rights is to affirm rights of groups.
