Land as independent
The entire family pitches in so that they can afford the land—something that Papa emphasizes is very important and worth their sacrifices.
-
Big Ma says that she’ll never sell the land to Harlan Granger, no matter how much he bothers her.
Mama wants to organizing a boycott, but Papa and Big Ma agree that there’s no way the Logans can back their credit with their land—it would surely result in the Logans losing the land. Papa said that the Logans are never going to lose their land.
Mr. Granger urges them to stop the boycott, threatening that he can make them lose their land if they don’t stop disturbing the peace.
The entire community bands together to protect the land, which brings everyone together in the end.
Family and community
Mama asks Stacey to bring her his new coat from Uncle Hammer so she can hem it for him, but he has given it away to his friend T.J. Mama is furious and wants him to get the coat, but Uncle Hammer wants Stacey to learn a lesson. If he is ignorant enough to give the coat away, then he does not deserve it
Cassie is interested in Mr. Morrison, but Stacey doesn't like him. Cassie knows this is because Stacey wants to be the man of the house while their father is away.
A week later, Papa and Mama talk about how much money they have left. They have very little, but they don't want to ask Hammer for any, because they don't want him to know what happened to Papa. If he found out, he would get very angry and probably get himself killed.
