Monkey - The second book: China is working hard to make sure giant pandas will live on.
Summary
There are 4 parts
Introducing pandas
Pandas live at Hetaoping Wilderness Training Base in China.
Cao Cao is a panda mom.
She gave birth to twin pandas at Hetaoping. They were born in captivity, not in the wild.
The twins are a beam of hope for all pandas.
There are not many pandas left in China. The species is in danger of becoming extinct.
That is why scientists are trying to bring them back. They are doing this with their return-to-nature program.
Pandas Must Have A Safe Place To Live
Protected land is important to this project.
Pandas need a safe home, or habitat.
Without a habitat, it is harder for pandas to survive.
The idea of this program
To breed the two pandas.
The hope is for their babies to one day live in the wild.
That is why China is working on making a huge park of protected land.
The Work Is Very Important
Life in the wild is hard for pandas no matter what. Sometimes they do not live very long or get hurt.
If we don't help them, they will be extinct within the next 30 to 50 years.
That's why we are training the captive-bred pandas for release.
Pandas Need Special Training That Will Take Time
The bear's training did not prepare it for life in the wild. At the time, Zhang said, trainers were mainly making things up as they went along.
Hetaoping researchers have tried to avoid human training and contact because "We used our human ideas on how to survive in the wild," Zhang said. "So he died."
The plan
The pandas must first survive.
Then they must reproduce and raise wild cubs. Those cubs must also survive and have cubs of their own.
