THE DECLARATIVE/PROCEDURAL MODEL
Michael Ullman
There are two types
of long-term memory
Declarative
memory (D)
Facts or experienced
events
Propositional knowledge
Store memory
Procedural
memory (P)
Execution of processes
Knowing how to do
things
Store skills
Procedural (P) memory
It is serviced by
structures in the

Frontal and basal
ganglia
Premotor cortex and part of the
Broca's area
It is implicit since
It is not accessible to
conscious awareness.
It takes longer to learn
It plays an important
role in learning
Procedures and mastering
known procedures
Procedures are
acquired
By learning and
processing rules
Sequence of actions
or repeated practice
(Morphophonology and
morphosyntaxis)
Interaction between
P and D memories
P and D can
be used in
Tandem to acquire
knowledge
Part of the knowledge
is stored in D
After some repetition it
will be processed by P
One and the same skill
may initially be learned using D
Which needs less
time to learn
While after some time
P may take learning
Declarative (D) memory
It is serviced by

Temporal lobe (hippocampus)
Frontal neuro-cortex that overlaps
with Broca's area
It is used to
Store, connect and retrieve
memories
The stored memory is
about
Factual knowledge (semantics and lexicon)
Memory of events (Episodic)
It is partly explicit
because
Knowledge is to some extent
accessible, i.e., conscious
awareness
