St.Patrick
St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain, but at the age of 16 he was captured by Irish raiders. He was kept as a slave for six years as a shepherd. He then escaped and returned to his family in Britain. He later became a priest and bishop and returned to Ireland
Pre-Christian Ireland
Before Christianity came to Ireland, the country was dominated by Celtic culture. The Celtic way of life had come to Ireland about 900 years ago

Early Irish Monasteries
In the sixth century and after, many monasteries were built as holy men wanted a place to pray and honour God. However, women such as St. Ita and St. Brigid founded some.
In the monasteries:
-
- Manuscripts (hand written books) were studied
- Metal-working and stone-carving
-
However, the monks had to follow strict rules
Round Towers
Round towers were stone towers between 25 and 40 metres tall, with four windows on the top floor facing north, south, east and west. There was also a bell on the top floor that was either used to warn the village of attack or call the monks for service
The door to the tower was 2 metres off the ground so when under attack, they would climb up the rope ladder, go into the tower and pull up the ladder behind them
