Chapter 4
Density and behavior
behavioral sink: prelude to population collapse
Calhoun: pathological behavior is a consequence of high densities, that the frequency and severity of such behavior increases in direct proportion to increased density
areal density: the persons per square mile in various sections of a city or cities
in-dwelling density: persons per house, per room, or per square foot of floor space
density does not cause certain behaviors, but it intensifies whatever tendencies are present
Population density

in demography it would include individual persons, groups of individuals, or artifacts created by people
D = Q/A
Q= quantity, D= destiny, and A= areal unit
central place theory: the center of an area, such as a city or state, is the most efficient point from which to gain access to the populations in that area
Territory
territorial imperative: members live and work close to one another
migration: entering or exiting a stipulated region
Geographic units
administrative and politcal areas: have legal standing, hold charters, and are administered by public officials
statistical areas: units created by census bureaus and like organizations for the sole purpose of collecting data
census block, block group or cluster, census tracts, cities and towns, urban agglomerations, minor civil divisions, census county divisions, counties, states, regions, and the nation
Geographic information systems
