Assistance
Academics (Osewalt n.d.)
Differentiate instruction using Universal Design Techniques
Make information available to all students
-
-
Mnemonics: creating devices for students to remember certain things that are necessary such as PEMDAS
-
Accommodations could include providing extra resources such as games, online games, visual cards, native language support
If all in class resources are exhausted; seek professional, outside help
Behavioral/Emotional
-
Form emotional bonds with students and get to know them so they feel confident in you. Allow students to talk to you privately if they feel it's necessary
-
The underlying cause for demeaning language may be observed behaviors at home. Reminding students of behavioral expectations everyday holds them accountable
-
Physical
Keep snacks and blankets in the classroom for students who may need extra physical care that they don't get at home
Students may live in a damaged home where they are abused and basic needs aren't being met. Reporting abuse to administration or social services could save a child's life. It is not the teacher's responsibility to pry; leave it up to specialists and report any suspected neglect or abuse
A rough home doesn't always mean neglect or abuse. Accommodation for students with rough home lives could mean extending due date periods
