In 1871-1921 the first numbered treaties were signed, these treaties gave the Europeans/Canadian government rights to some of their land and resources in return for education, reserved land (reserves), annuities, health care and other things like that. In the 1870's the first residential schools were opened. Residential schools aimed to assimilate the FN people by teaching them Catholic beliefs and trying to diminish all aspects of their culture completely. In 1876 the Indian act was passed, at first the act aimed to assimilate the First Nations peoples even further, but it was later amended multiple times until eventually in around 1951 it granted the FN people basic collective rights and removed a lot of the discriminatory rules under the act. Section 35 of the constitution was introduced in 1982, this section recognized the FN people as an aboriginal group and affirmed their aboriginal rights. In 1996 the last residential school closed, The Government of Canada continues to make amends with the FN people and tries to make the the quality of life of aboriginal people better to this day.
