Urban issues and challenges - Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) :recycle:
About Rio:
The cultural centre of Brazil
Major tourist place (Industrial, Administrative and Commercial)
A UNESCO World Heritage site
Second largest city in Brazil
Hosted the 2014 Football world cup
Hosted the 2016 Olympics
Causes of Urban growth:
Social:
Authorities have tried to improve health care in the favela of Santa Marta. It is 13km from the nearest hospital and very difficult to get to due to a lack of road access. Health care workers now visit the favela regularly to detect and treat diseases. As a result, infant mortality has fallen and life expectancy increased.
Economic:
Migrants have come from South Korea and China seeking new business opportunities.
Environmental
In order to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality, the city has expanded it’s metro system under Guanabara bay. There are also new toll roads to deter traffic and making certain coastal roads one-way.
Challenges
Education is only compulsory for 6-14 year olds
Up to 1000 Favelas
Lack of money
Waste disposal
Water and air pollution
Diseases like Cholera
