Internal Influence
After Charlie's surgery, he started to come in touch with his feelings and emotions. He began to develop feelings for Alice. His feelings are the internal influence that caused him to change. Trying to understand his emotions caused him to change because he needed to understand how these emotions fit into his life.
External Influence
As Charlie gains intelligence, he starts to understand the world. He realizes that he had been mistreated and used by the people he thought were his friends. He feels hurt by this. After figuring this out, Charli became self-conscious and paranoid, not knowing who to trust. This proves that the people around him are his external influence. Charlie wouldn't have changed if he hadn't been bullied by his friends.
