Charlie Gordon
-
Dynamic Character
An example of an internal influence is the expanding of his mind overtime which allows his perspective to change into someone who only focuses on his intelligence instead of caring for others
" As I listened to what she was saying, the enormity of it dawned on me. I had been so absorbed in myself and what was happening to me that I never thought was what happening to her" (Keyes 96)
One external influence that changed the development of Charlie's character is the brain surgery that he underwent .
"Then Ill be abel to reed better and spell the werds good and know lots of things and be like other pepul...Boy woud they be surprised to see me smart just like them and my sister." (Keyes 15)
Role as the Protagonist
Charlie has proven to be the central character by writing his daily reports which helps us observe how he has grown in every aspect.
" I asked Professor Nemur about it, and he insists that I'm an innocent bystander and there's no reason for me to become involed in what would be an unpleasant situation" (Keyes 72)
Narrator Influence
Charlie's first-person account affects the reader's interpretation of his character because as we see in the beginning of the story his grammar and spelling were not where it needed to be but as the story continues we see how he has grown emotionally and intellectually.
"Oh, Christ! Never mind giving it a nice neat label. What matters in that before I got involved in this experiment I had friends, people who cared for me. Now I'm afraid--" (Keyes 85)
Direct Characterization
