        Indirect characterization. You could say according to the novel and the nuances found within that Charlie is gullible and a very curious person. Gullible because he was not always willing to see that he was the but of the joke. However as he grew smarter he outgrew that as he gained sense of self. And curious because anybody can become smart however he is eager to continue learning. He is anything but complacent. Even when he was slower he was eager to learn.
        
        Textual evidence 1: "Some times somebody will say hey lookit Frank, or Joe or even Gimpy. He really pulled a Charlie Gordon that time. I dont know why they say it but they always laff and I laff too." (Keyes 23)
        
        Textual evidence 2: "I tolld him because all my life I wantid to be smart and not dumb and my mom always tolld me to try and lern just like Miss Kinnian tells me but its very hard to be smart and even when I lern something in Miss Kinnians class at the school I ferget alot."(Keyes 8)

- - - - Direct characterization: You could say that Charlie has lived his whole life as a 5 year old and with the sudden intelligence he is aging mentally. However due to this lack of prior knowledge and ability to reason, he is left with a child like innocence when it comes to the cruel ways of the world.
        
        Textual evidence; "I feel a lot better today, but I'm still angry that all the time people were laughing and making fun of me. When I become intelligent the way Prof. Nemur says, with much more than twice my I.Q. of 70, then maybe people will like me and be my friends."(Keyes 42)

- - - - Internal: Charlie is wrestling with himself to determine what type of person he is. Handling this sudden growth is crazy and he is trying to navigate it. When certain scenarios arise he is a constant fight to determine his character. In his own way he is becoming a whole new person. trying to figure out his beliefs and morality.
        
        Internal Textual Evidence: "But I still have to decide what to do. Tell Donner that his trusted employee has been stealing from him all these years? Gimpy would deny it, and I could never prove it was true. And what would it do to Mr. Donner? I don't know what to do."(Keyes 71)
      - External textual Evidence: "Everyone seems frightened of me. When I went over to Gimpy and tapped him on the shoulder to ask him something, he jumped up and dropped his cup of coffee all over himself. He stares at me when he thinks I'm not looking. Nobody at the place talks to me any more, or kids around the way they used to. It makes the job kind of lonely."(Keyes 51)
