        Cortes led an expedition west, landing in modern Mexico. The locals were terrified by these tall, white men on horses, who brought cannons with them- they had never seen white men, horses or cannons before and assumed that Cortes was a messenger from God. Local tribes who hated the Aztecs agreed to take him to the Aztec capital city so that he could conquer their enemy!
        
        The Emperor, Cuauhtémoc, both curious and fearful of these white men and their weapons, so he invited them into the city to talk. Cortes’ men quickly took control of the royal palace and forced the Emperor to pretend everything was OK. This meant that the Emperor would do as Cortes told him… in other words, Cortes was now the unofficial emperor!
