- - - - economic: The five years plans for rapid industrial development. Which focused more on the industrial sector rather than the agriculture which was more than 4/5ths of the economically active population. Which had it rely of capital resources for a large part of its fund requirements.
      - domestic:The hundred flowers campaign, where censorship was momentarily lifted and intellectuals could speak out about the government. Criticism and a purge of the intellectuals followed and more than 500,000 people were sent to labor camps in the countryside.
      - cultural: Mao's goal was to preserve Chinese communism by purging remnants of Catholic tradition and reimpose Maoism. Its influence was felt all throughout urban society and greatly affected the economy.
      - social: Mao's social polices included the red guards which were created for the older age groups and the little red guards for the younger. They worshiped the cult of Mao. As a result 500,000 students died either by violence or suicide.

      - successes and failures: He was able to get people to fear him, they would listen if they could be scared of him. He also got people to feel more connected to him. He was able to emphasize his greatness with the little red book which most everyone carried.
