somatosensory cortex
- frm the specific sensory nuclei of thalamus
neurons project in a highly specific way
to the 2 somatic sensory area of the cortex
primary sensory area S1
characteristic features
- is located in the postcentral gyrus
containing the
Brodmann's area 3,2,1
- respond to 'light touch
- & receive a dense input
frm the thalamus
- respond to deep stimuli such as
pressure & joint movement s
- & receive few thalamic fibers
- is supplied by afferents
frm the opposite side of the body
- but from both sides of the face
- there is a detailed ( somatotropic)
loalization of fibers
frm variuos parts of the body
in the postcentral gyrus
removal of S2
- produces deficits in learning
-based on tactile discrimination power
- but sensory processing in S1
is not affected
-
