Special education techniques in classroom
1- Teach through direct instruction.
Direct instruction is a proven method in which the child is taught exactly what he needs to learn. With direct instruction, the information is presented very clearly through well-tested materials that rule out the possibility of misinterpretation and confusion.
2-Teach Just One New Concept at a Time.
Teaching one concept at a time respects the limitations of your child’s short-term memory, and allows concepts and skills to be more easily stored in the long-term memory.
3-Make Review a Priority.
Consistent review is the key to getting spelling facts and spelling words to “stick.” Teaching something once or twice does not mean your child has actually mastered it. Mastery takes time—and practice.
4-Keep Lessons Short but Frequent.
In a short lesson, your child’s attention is less likely to wander, and you’ll find that you can actually accomplish more. Keep the lessons upbeat and fast-paced, and use teaching tools and activities that engage the child’s interests.
5-Recognize the Power of Encouraging Words.
In the ups and downs of the daily grind, we sometimes get so focused on teaching and “improving” our kids that we forget to encourage them.
6- Use music and voice inflection
Use music and voice inflection. When transitioning to an activity, use a short song to finish up one task and move to another. Many of us have sung the “clean up” while cleaning up before the next activity; use a similar approach in the classroom. Students with special needs might also respond well to varied voice inflection and tone
Refer to counselor
A counselor can support in different behavior issue, were she can understand the student reaction to certain behavior issue and sometimes it is necessary to involve parent for better behavior control
Spend time with each student
Teachers should spend time with their students to break ice and get to understand them more and makes them feel comfortable and relaxed, talk with students on one-on-one.
Parent intervention
Keep parents updated on their child progress is essentially required to help their child improve better with practices at certain time.
Help with the lack of confidence
positive self talk to encourage the student
Find their strengths and encourage by praising them
Identify their weakness and try to build confidence by encoring them to make better
Break down the struggling areas into smaller parts ( differentiated learning )
