Warfare
New Technology made war more difficult then it already was due to these new weapons such as machine guns and airplanes affecting more so the infantry men who fought the most. Certain benefits to them were transports such as submarines and tanks as heavy infantry and submarines to attack where not expected. Due to heavy infantry and chemical warfare like gas; there were more casualties than ever and more gruesome.
Total War is when there are no weapons, territory, objective or soldiers involved off limits to be used. Rationing is only giving a certain amount of supply. Propaganda is misinformation forcing one to believe something in a certain way.
Trench Warfare is fighting in trenches facing each other. No Mans Land was the land in between the trenches faced where enemies are hiding waiting to shoot whatever moves so no man would cross that. Starvation was a major issue or shortage of cleaning supplies and sick soldiers would be an issue as well. A stalemate is is a situation in which no side has a clear victory.
Major Battles were Schlieffen Plan, where it was an operation by the Germans to take over France and Belgium in August 1914 with the Germans failing and secondly Battle of Somme was when it was an offensive on the French part in which technically the Germans lost as they suffered heavy losses which showed the futility of trench warfare. Battle of Verdun with no clear winner as it followed another battle since French and Germans lost many soldiers which affected the start of the Battle of Somme in July 1918.
Triple Entente had France, Russia and The UK with leaders such as David Lloyd George and with the Triple Alliance had Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy with a main chiefly who was Otto von Bismarck.
The US joins Russia, France, and Britain because of the Zimmerman Telegram and Germany not restricting submarine warfare. The US joining the war made the defeat of Germany possible. An armistice was similar to a truce between sides. Russia left the war because of personal country issues with a civil war so the side lost a major superpower.
Causes
M stands for Militarism. This was seen in many countries when they spent a lot of money on modern technology and trained their soldiers .
A stands for Alliance. This was seen when there were two different alliances formed called the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. They had agreements among one another to help each other out if they are in battle. Which grew tensions when the countries were not of the same alliance.
I stands for Imperialism. This was seen when Germany wanted more power and control over certain areas of Africa and this created tensions among countries around Germany.
N stands for Nationalism. This was seen when in the 1700s and 1800s when certain cultures fought to get their own countries like modern Italy and Germany. Wanting connection was common but certain empires prevented this like the Ottoman Empire.
In 1914 , Archduke Franz and his wife were assassinated while visiting the capital of Sarajevo by a Bosnian nationalist. Which was the "spark" of the eventual fights to come.
Gavrilo Princip was the, at the time, boy who killed the Austrian heir, Archduke Franz. He was the one who let everything play out as he killed the Archduke and thought by many caused by Austrian oppression.
Effects
Woodrow Wilson wanted a peace treaty for the League of Nations and wanted US to be neutral, Georges Clemenceau representing France and wanted Germany to pay for being the cause of the war and pay for it which they eventually did, David Lloyd George also helped with the Treaty of Versailles, and finally Vittorio with Italy who helped defeat the Central Powers.
Fourteen Points was a statement of principles for peace by Woodrow Wilson to be used for peace negotiations to end WW1 and the most important was wanting a international organization.
Self determination where President Wilson encouraged to the European nations by supporting the rights so that they can rule themselves. The League of Nations was an international group after WW1 as a way to solve problems. Certain countries did not join the League of Nations like the US and Saudi Arabia while others joined like the British, Japan and France.
Treaty of Versailles punished the German country the most with them being in debt which did bring WW1 to an end involving President Wilson, Geroges Clemenceau, and David Lloyd George. Prevented Germany from having a strong military.
