Key Terms

-
-
-
Frameshift Mustation
When a nucleotide is deleted or inserted, changes all subsequent codon
-
-
Types of Mutations
Chromosomal alteration
-
-
TYPES: deletion, duplication, inversion, insertion, translocation
-
Somatic Mutations
not as serious b/c they can only occur in one cell and its daughter cells. Cannot be passed onto offspring
Frameshift Mutation
greatly affect protein synthesis. Codons are groups of 3 nucleotides, adding/deleting a nucletoide shifts everything over and changes every codon afterwards, which completely changes the amino acids produced
-
-
Causes of Mutations
accidental and happen randomly as the result of mistakes during DNA replication or transcription. Examples: ATG -> ATCA
