Ways to Assess
Traditional Summative Test (could include multiple choice and fill in the blank) (Torres, 2020, Slide 10)
Performance tasks such as journaling, creating a presentation, or completing an activity while making sure to follow the rubric (Torres, 2020, Slide 10)
Can be formal or informal, as well as formative or summative (Torres, 2020, Slide 10)
Testing can also be standardized or nonstandardized (Torres, 2020, Slide 11)
No matter what, testing must be valid and reliable (Torres, 2020, Slide 12)
Purpose
Plan instructional activities and monitor the progress of instruction (Torres, 2020, Slide 6)
Provides teacher with practical knowledge of students characteristics, such as awareness of student problems or disabilities (Torres, 2020, Slide 6)
Carry out the bureaucratic aspects of teaching (grading, grouping, placing). To know what students can and can't do. (Torres, 2020, Slide 3)
Establishes the equilibrium (Torres, 2020, Slide 6)
Limitations
"Banking"
In this scenario, students only need to maintain knowledge of content until they have achieved the grade they desire. After assessment, students will keep that grade even with the possibility of them forgetting the knowledge entirely. (Wiliam, p. 4)
Many tests are predictable and do not adequately cover the intended area of education often due to lack of funding and time to test thoroughly. (Wiliam, p.3)
Using the same assessment in order to serve multiple purposes can be conflicting. Lack of funding can push this to be prominent and problematic. (Wiliam, p. 2)
In standardized testing, the assessments do not always provide accurate scores due to accountability often being unfair, as well as that assessments are often used to account for multiple purposes. (William, p. 1-2)
