Thoreau visited certain tree groves like pines, groves, hemlocks, and birches.

John Field
Thoreau sees this man and his family after he is forced to take shelter from the rain. Thoreau describes the baby as unknowing of its unfortunate life circumstances.
Field tells Thoreau about all the work he does and in return Thoreau explains how he spends less money because he doesn't spend money on rent, meat, and coffee.
Thoreau explains how he doesn't need to work as hard and Field says that he came to America from Ireland for a better life.
Different lifestyles
Thoreau speaks to Field as if he were a philosopher and tells him that his work wears out his clothes which requires him to work more to get new clothes.
On the other hand Thoreau wears light clothes which allows him to afford whatever he needs and work.
Thoreau tells Field that if he lives his life simply he too can afford things with ease. The Fields consider it but also think it may be difficult.
Fishing
Thoreau leaves after the rain is over Thoreau asks for a dish so he can see the well then he rushes off to fish.
Thoreau believes that most men live the same day over and over again when they should be able to come home with a new experience everday.

Living simply
Thoreau believes that Field is living a wrong life style and that could change if they decide to live like him.

If Field is poor then his entire blood line will be also until they make the concious decision to start living differently.
