Learning Unit 2
Frame of Reference
-
-
Your unique window of the world, the way you experience and interpret reality
Formed by your physical environment growing up, family life, culture, temperament, intelligence and gender
Frame of reference is connected to 'social cognitive'- study of how people interpret, analyse, remember and use information about the social world
'Mental models' are mental processes that we are unaware of that help us make sense of the world, as well as influence our communication behaviour
-
-
-
Culture
-
The various beliefs, behaviours, languages, practices and expressions considered unique to members of a specific ethnicity, race or national origin
If we know and understand the rules of a certain culture, we will be able to understand the behaviour of the people from the culture better
Cultures create a perceptual frame of reference that forms the basis for the way people interact with one another through language and non-verbal behaviour
Perceptual frameworks come from our past experiences and helps us interpret, evaluate and draw conclusions on how we see the world
