atomic structure
-
structure of the atom
-
the nucleus contains two types of sub atomic particle, called protons and neutrons
a third type of sub-atomic particle orbits the nucleus, these are called electons
-
protons = relative charge of +1, relative mass is 1
neutron= relative charge is 0, relative mass is 1
electron = relative is charge is -1, the relative mass is very small (it would take almost 2000 electrons to have the same mass as one proton or neutron)
because every atom contains equal numbers of protons and electrons, the positive and negative charges cancel out
so there is no overall charge on any atom. for example , a carbon atom is neutral. it has six protons, so you know it must have six electrons
atomic number
all the atoms of a particular element have the same number of protons. for example, hydrogen atoms all have one proton in their nucleus , carbon atoms have six protons in their nucleus and sodium atom have 11 protons in their nucleus
