Pathophysiology
Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart beat that results from multiple loci sending electrical impulses within the atria. This causes the atria to quiver rapidly and send uncoordinated electrical signals. This can then cause blood to pool in the atria and increase the chance of clots, which can be sent up to the brain and cause a stroke.
Rapid ventricular response is often seen with a fib and is a ventricular rate > 100bpm. It can be treated with beta-blockers to slow the heart rate and keep the a fib controlled.
Complications
-
Low K levels can lead
to heart palpitations and
dysrhythmias, paralysis,
twitching, muscle weakness
and cramping.
