English: The theme of witchcraft in Macbeth

dark, violent settings. Lonely settings
everytime we meet the witches, it is in a setting with dark, violent connoctations
Act 1 scene 1. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING ENTER THREE WITCHES
"in thunder, lghtning or rain"
3 weather conditions which all have negative connotations. Such as rain has depressed connotations e.g when someone dies. Thunder has violent connotations as when thunder strikes it is very violent. Lightning is a dangerous bolt of electricity. danger is foreshadowed here as i the play, danger is a common theme.
every time they meet, it is in a lonely place too, such as act 1 scene 1, "A DESERTED PLACE" foreshadows Macbeth's isolation as he pushes everyone away.
Equivocation
This is a major theme . Shows that people are hiding things. hiding things and keeping secret was seen as a sin ad the work of the devil.

King James blamed the plot on witchcraft
King James showed an interest in this as he conducted witchcraft as well as anonymously publishing a book about witches.
How the audience portrays them
When the witches are introduced, the audience are likely to feell disgusted and angry. this creates internal conflict within the audiences minds which causes drama.
They are cruel, ugly and vindictive

they speak in verse but it is a trochaic metre. Also use rhyming couplets
