Reasons why performers take performance enhancing drugs
To increase their standards of performance and achieve faster times/greater heights/greater distances
· In order to win the extrinsic rewards (high prize money or medals)
· Due to the Lombardian ethic, which is winning at all costs
· In order to gain sponsorship, which means that the performers’ revenue increases
· They lack the physiological capabilities to reach the top/win without taking performance enhancing drugs
· They believe all other performers are taking performance enhancing drugs and therefore do the same in order to level the playing field
· State sponsored doping programmes (government sponsored) mean that performers are forced to take performance enhancing drugs to win
Consequences of taking performance enhancing drugs (performers)
Performers are punished:
receive lifetime bans
and are fined
· Performers lose their sponsorships (can be forced to pay back some of their sponsorship)
· Performers are shown in a negative light/as poor role models and are criticised by the media
Consequences of taking performance enhancing drugs (clubs)
Clubs can be punished:
o fined
o removed from competitions
o sponsors withdraw their sponsorship
Consequences of taking performance enhancing drugs (sport itself)
Creates a high number of negative role models for young athletes
· Therefore the sport is shown in a negative light
· Which potentially decreases participation in the sport
· And could cause a reduction in the number of spectators at events
