A Pebble for Your Pocket STORIES
The Precious Gem
Very wealthy man had lazy son
Father gave son a jacket and asked son to never sell jacket but could squander the rest of his inheritance
Son inherited fortune from father when he died
Son did squander inheritance
A few years later when destitute son felt something uncomfortable in jacket but couldn't find anything
Son ripped jacket open and found precious gem
Started own business and wasn't lazy anymore
We are all like son
We have inherited great wealth - enlightenment, understanding, joy, love
Being mindful help you claim it
You Are a Buddha-to-Be
"Buddha" comes from "budh" means to awaken, to understand and to know
aware of everything in present moment
we are all Buddhas
in each of us seeds of love, understanding and compassion;
if we water these seeds they will blossom and bear fruit
Be Kind to Yourself
some things we ingest ie. food, or drink may make feel better but can lead to addiction
consciousness is food eg. through magazines, TV same as above
brings toxins into our consciousness
fear, distress, and despair can be fed
Stopping
Zen story of man on horse riding.
Another man asks where he is going and the rider say he doesn't know and to ask the horse = HABIT ENERGY"
eg. when family member does something that annoys us and we say something mean which causes a fight; later we say we couldn't help it
promise ourselves won't do next time but we do
even when sit still mind still can be racing with thoughts of the past, future, etc.
stopping makes us more solid, concentrated and intelligent
Under the Rose Apple Tree
meditate as it can make you happy
it is just for you
mind become calm and clear (mud settling in water)
sit in any position
meditation transforms our garbage into compost which turns into flowers
Planting the Seeds
of Happiness
have both seeds of happiness and unhappiness in us
when meditate planting the seeds of happiness
happiness and suffering connected - without one can't experience the other
eg. being hungry and then having something to eat
You Have Never Been Born
eg. paper = cloud + rain + tree
any part removed and rest will collapse
something never comes from nothing = inter-being
eg. paper = sunshine + rain + earth + paper factory + workers + food workers eat, etc.
wave on ocean
are created ten return to the water
share your life with every other wave =
inter-being
when a cloud is about to become rain it is not scared
as being rain is something wonderful too
helping trees grow, plants grow, etc.
Mara (opposite of Buddha)
absence of enlightenment
misunderstanding
hatred / anger
etc.
Mara within Buddha
garbage within the rose
organic stuff needed by rose
nondualistic point of view
Other Examples:
good & evil
happiness & suffering
when recognize feelings of distress
look deeply and will see
seed of happiness and libration
