Change management vs change leadership
The world uses change
management
A set of processes and tools and mechanisms that are designed that when you do try and make some changes that...
It doesn't get out of control
The number of problems associated with it (eg rebellion, bleeding of cash you can't afford) doesn't happen
Its a way of making a big change and keeping it under control
Tends to be associated (when it works well) with smaller changes
Everyone talks about managing change and change management
Because that is what they do
The tools are used to push things along and minimize disruptions (keep control) and make sure change is done efficiently (eg you don't go over budget)
Done with change management groups within organisations or external consultants, training in change management, task forces (the goal is pushing change but under control)
Change leadership
Associated with putting an engine on the whole change process
Making it go faster, smarter and more efficiently
Associated with large scale changes
Is fundamentally different to change management
An engine that more about urgency and masses of people that want to make something happen
Its about big visions and empowering lots of people
Has the potential to get things a little out of control
There isnt the same degree of making sure that everything happens in the way and time you want with a quick engine
There needs to be a highly skilled driver and good car which will make sure risks are minimal
The world as we know doesn't do much change leadership - more management
The bigger leaps and associated with windows of opportunity that are coming at us faster, and staying open for less time with bigger hazards
Will be the bigger challenge in the future
No one is very good at it
