Upper GI tract
Gastric or duodenal ulcer (50%)
Gastric erosion (15-20%)
Varices (10-20%)
Wellory-Weiss syndrome (5-10%)
Reflux oesophagitis (2-5%)
Gastric carcinoma (uncommon)
Lower GI tract
Haemorroids
Large bowel polyps or carcinoma
Anal fissure
Diverticular disease
Inflammatory bowel disease
Upper GI red flags
Dysphagia
Blood loss
Unexplained weight loss
Upper abdominal or epigastric mass
New onset upper GI pain if >55yrs old or if risk factor (e.g. +ve for FH)
Unexplained worsening dyspepsia without other symptoms if >55yrs old
Unexplained iron deficiency anaemia
Persistent vomiting
Painless jaundice
Unexplained back pain
Lower GI red flags
Persistent change in bowel habit (4 weeks+)
Especially if to looser stools
Past history of lower GI cancer with any of the symptoms
Repeated rectal bleeding without obvious rectal cause
Any blood mixed with stool
Right sided abdominal mass
Palpable rectal mass
Unexplained iron deficiency anaemia
