6.6 Mining
Minerals: a naturally occuring chemical element or compound that exists as a solid with regularly repeating iternal arrangement of its atoms or ions
They are non renewable
However we depend in many of them. We know how to find and extract more than 100 different mienrals from the crust

Types of mining
Sub Surface Mining
Used to remove metal ores and coal that are too dep to be extracted by surface mining uses machinery
less destructive for the environment than surface mining but can be more dangerous for miners and is more expensive
-
Ocean mining?
not worth it, either concentrations are so low that it is not profitable. Or mining hydrothermal ore depositis will likely destroy unique marine ecosystems
-
Processing ores
processing higher grade ore is better because it takes less money, energy, water ,and resources, also leads to less pollution
- separate metal from the ore: smelt or chemical solvents
- separate ore from waste material
