Mindfulness for Children with ASD
Breath work
involves breath in 4 seconds, hold, breath out 7 seconds
Yoga
Teach 5 simple yoga poses and associate with age appropriate nicknames: tree-pose, down-dog pose, cat-cow pose, superman pose, mountain pose.
Grounding
Starting at the toes and move through each body part to the head, describing how each one feels against the ground.
Inhibitory techniques
In order to direct this program towards kids with ASD but also involve the entire classroom, the after school club will focus on addressing the different deficits faced by children with ASD and will be taught in the classroom briefly at the start of the day to all of the students.
Level 2
Require substantial support
Level 3
Require very substantial support
Level 1
Require support
Although the discrepancies between the levels are ambiguous, it comes down to the level of help that is needed in social interactions and behavioral regulation.
The level of help required can be used to split up the after school program
Level 1: Teacher explains the breathing and yoga using images and demonstration, has them repeat this a few times.
Level 2: Teacher does a more in depth explanation and demonstration that involves more repetition
Level 3: Teacher goes over techniques very slow and makes sure kids can do them before moving on. Use images and videos and props.
Overall: imagery (pictures and objects), small steps, repetition (teaching and practicing), systemic instruction (small, gradual)
Difficulty with sensory processing: weighted vests and blankets help with modulation in hyper and hypo responsive children.
