Palatoglossus
Draws the tongue upwards and backwards
Styloglossus
Draws the tongue upwards and backwards
Hyoglossus
Draws the sides downwards
Genioglossus
Tone keeps the tongue from folding backwards and suffocating
Protrudes
Has vertical, longitudinal and transverse fibres
Attach the tongue to the styloid process and the soft palate above and to the mandible and hyoid bone below
Their role is to alter the position of the tongue
All innervated by hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)expect palatoglossues which is innervated by the pharyngeal plexus (CN X)
