PHEBD VBA Reflection
Describe the process that you followed to give VBA to support of one of your patients who was a current smoker
Patient characteristics (i.e. age, oral health status, history of smoking
36yo female, OH was P, minimally restored dentition, smoking 5 cigarettes a day for approx 17 years = 4.25 pack years

Process: Ask/Advise/Act)
ASK: Taking a social history is a standard part of screening patients. After having asked for her pack years (number of cigarettes a day/20 in a pack x number of years smoking), it was the perfect time to implement VBA for two reasons. Firstly, we were still on the topic of smoking, and seeing as she had answered my previous questions I knew she was comfortable discussing her smoking habits. The second is that during this screening process whilst you are getting to know the pt and visa versa, it is important to demonstrate that as her dentist I would be looking after more than just her mouth...
; by providing VBA i was demonstrating to her that I am interested in her general health, not just her oral health. I therefore asked her if she was interested in quitting smoking. After pausing to think for a moment she responded saying that she would be, and that actually she had managed to quit in the past, the longest being for 6mths.
ADVISE: Based on this information, I made an effort to tailored my response. I first congratulated her on managing to quit in the past, but also to not be disheartened she had not managed to quit for good. It was here I then provided the relevant statistics - that actually it takes most people a few tries before they quit smoking for good, and that your are four times more likely to quit with a combination of support and medication from the NHS verses going alone. I then finally congratulated her one more time in being motivated enough to have another go quitting and asked that with all this information, if she would like me to refer her to the local smoking cessation services
ACT: The patient said she would be happy to for me to do so, so I made a note to make the referral at the end of the appointment, and told her to expect them to get in contact with her soon.
