The Spartacist uprising
After the war, Germans wanted a socialist government
Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg led the Spartacists
In December 1918, they clashed with government, 16 Spartacists died
in January 1919, they tried to overthrow government but were put down by the Freikorps (ex-soldiers + anti-communists
The Spartacists wanted to establish a communist state
Terms of the Treaty of Versailles
Germans felt humiliated with the Treaty of Versailles
They thought it was a dictated peace
They blamed the Weimar Republic and named them the November Criminals
A theory began to grow that the government had stabbed Germany in the back (the Dolchstoss theory)
The Kapp putsch
The Weimar Republic tried to reduce the size of the army and get rid of the Freikorps, after they helped them eliminate the Spartacists
The leader of the Freikorps joined forces with a politician called Wolfgang Kapp
They planned to seize Berlin and form a right wing government and were supported by the army.
The Weimar Republic relied on the workers going on strike to put down the Putsch. it was successful but made the Weimar look weak

Value of money went down as no reparations were being paid, France invaded
Germany printed more and more money, the value decreased
Most people with savings or on a fixed income found themselves penniless
