Physical and Human Characteristics of The Paris Basin
CLIMATE
The center has a transitional climate which is between the other two.
West of Region has a maritime climate. Cool summers (16 degrees) and winters of (5 degrees)
East has a continental climate, hot (19 degrees) and cold winters (2 degrees)
Population Dynamics
Paris Basin holds one-third of the population of France (22 million)
Contains educated,skilled work force and also an unskilled workforce.
Wealthy local market and large EU one nearby.
RELIEF
In the east there are low-lying upland ridges.
Relief is caused by the huge Amorican sycline in underlying rock layers.
Layers of chalk, limestone, and clay covered by sands and gravels produce distinct farming zones called pays.
SOILS
Limon soil in the center. (very fertile)
Sand and gravel soils in south.
Infertile soils on chalk scraps in the east.
Clay soils in the Brie region.
Drainage
River Seine and tributaries flow north-west across the center of the region.
River Somme flows west across the north.
River Loire flows west across the southern part of the region
Government/EU Policy
Schéma Directeur is plan to control growth of the city.
Competitive clusters have been identified for development.
EU gives less Cap and other funds to France because of its wealth
Infrastructure
Well-developed road, rail and canal systems.
Located at center of EU so attractive for industry
Only two hour journey to London by train, one to Brussels and six hours to Frankfurt by road.
