Syllables
Are units of
phonological organization and smaller than words; units of rhythm. Although
they may contain several sounds, they combine them in ways that create the effect of unity.
Types:
- monosyllables or monosyllabic: a single syllable
- polysyllables or polysyllabic: more than one
Accents
Some identifiable groups of people share (with some individual variation) a collection of sounds that are not found elsewhere. We think of accents as marking out people by geographical region and, to a less degree, by social class or education.
