Types of listening
Task-Oriented Listening
ask-oriented listening A listening style that is primarily concerned with accomplishing the task at hand. An example of this is a server asking someone in a resteraunt in the back of the kitchen if they have enough eggs.
Relational Listening
relational listening A listening style that is driven primarily by the concern to build emotional closeness with the speaker. An example is talking to your friend about troubles they have in life.
Analytical Listening
Listening in which the primary goal is to fully understand the message, prior to any evaluation. An example is a police officer listening to a witness for information on a police report.
Critical Listening
Listening in which the goal is to evaluate the quality or accuracy of the speaker's remarks. An example of critical listening is listening to the presidential debates carefully with dudillegence to decide who you will vote for.
