Zero Conditional: Kauan Estoque Pereira - grupo 6- turma A
Function
when we have a sentence that the result of the condition is always true, we call it zero conditional . This conditional is used when the result will always happen. So, if water reaches 100 degrees, it always boils. It's a fact. I'm talking in general, not about one particular situation. The
result of the 'if clause' is always the main clause.
Cases:
Proverbs
Preferences
General truths
Rules and laws
Facts
Superstitions
Cause and effect
To talk about things which are always true or things which
happen as a result of something
Structure
Zero conditional form:
If + condition (simple present) + result (simple present)
example: If + you heat water = it boils.
For this conditional, all the results are true. In this case the sentences don’t talk about the future, or past, or even the present, they talk about fact, almost scientific facts. We use the Present Simple Tense to talk about the condition and about the result.
Look at some examples:
(If + Conditional + Result )
If I miss the 6 o'clock bus, I arrive late for work.
If I am late for work, my boss gets very angry.
(Result + if + condition)
I arrive late for work if I miss the 6 o'clock bus.
My boss gets angry if I am for work.
In all cases of the conditional, there isn’t a fixed order for the clauses. We change their places in sentence depending the punctuation or pronoun, or another element, there is not a rule. In this case we can replace the “if” for “when”, once both express the same idea, which means general truths.
