The Tropical Rainforests
Definitions
Abiotic – are non-living features of an ecosystem e.g. climate, soil, temperature, water & light
-
-
Deforestation – the cutting down of trees, often on a very large scale
Emergents – Fast-growing trees such as Kapok out compete other trees to reach sunlight above the canopy
-
Lianas – woody creeping plants that loop around trees to reach the canopy where they have their leaves and flowers
-
PLANTS
In the Rainforest all the tall trees are growing trying to reach past the canopy to catch sunlight for respiration to happen. To keep these trees upright and stable as they grow, trees have adapted their roots where they are massive roots that stabilize the weight. These roots are called Buttress Roots.
Plants have also adapted in their environment as they have grown thick waxed leaves and drip tip leaves which allow the water to fall on the plant and move off the plant quickly without damaging it. This adaptation also works for trees ith their bark as it is really smooth so water can fall down fast and be able to get to the ground
there are so many cool plants in this biome as there are lianas where they are plants that grown and move up the tree (hitchhiking) so they dont have to wate much energy so they can reach the top for sunlight. we also have Epiphytes (plants that live on the branches), they are high up the tree so they can recive maximum sunlight and no soil is required for them to grow. the just need water and sunlight.
ANIMALS
Many animals living in the rainforest such as the spider monkey has strong limbs which are useful for them to survive in their ecosystem. other animals have different adaptations which allows them to carry out a different procedure. for example a sloth is very well camoflauged into the trees as the fur is the same pigment but also they move really slow to make predators miss them as they dont move.
most of these animals have adaptations most animals like jaguars can swim to cross streams for prey and also animals have webbed hands to swim easily.
DEFORESTATION
the annual rate for deforestation is a massive 130,000km2. that is tragic and deeply sad as most of this land is animals habitats and plants that could be a cure for cancer. only 2% of plants hv ebeen tested and identified in the rainforest and we are killing the opportunity to save lives and create a cure.
BRAZIL and INDONESIA were the two main countires of cause of deofrestation in the years between 2001 - 2014
